Saltaire Archive is a richly varied collection of documents, photographs and artefacts; a vital resource for anyone wishing to find out more about the World Heritage Site. Volunteer archivists care for it on a daily basis.
The collection is owned by Shipley College and is housed in the Saltaire Archive Room within the Learning & Resource Centre in Exhibition Building. In 2015 the College signed an agreement for Saltaire Stories to manage and promote educational use of the Archive.
Cataloguing has been underway for several years, and now the Heritage Lottery is funding professional assistance for the volunteer archivists. Saltaire Stories aims to complete the catalogue, make the Archive more accessible, and develop learning resources.
The Archive is valued both by people with local connections and by researchers from far afield. College and university students write dissertations using Archive material and their own research into present day issues affecting Saltaire.
Occasional exhibitions of Archive material have been held for many years; in the summer, during World Heritage Weekend in April or Saltaire Festival in September. These always attract hundreds of visitors. Smaller displays for other occasions have become possible through Saltaire Stories.
